Bringing communities together, The Fencing Bloke helped create a safe, welcoming space for families navigating childhood cancer.
A local Cheshire business has joined forces with the BBC’s DIY SOS to help transform the lives of families affected by childhood cancer. The Fencing Bloke volunteered on the recent build for The Joshua Tree, the Cheshire charity dedicated to supporting families living with the life-changing impact of childhood cancer.
The project brought together tradespeople, volunteers, and suppliers from across the region, all giving their time, skills, and materials to help create new, purpose-built facilities for families who rely on The Joshua Tree’s support. The Fencing Bloke contributed specialist fencing skills and practical support, helping to bring the ambitious project to life.

For owner Ash, the experience was deeply personal:
“When you meet the families who walk through The Joshua Tree’s doors, you realise just how vital this place is,” Ash said. “Being able to turn up, work hard, and contribute—even in a small way—felt incredibly meaningful. DIY SOS brought together an entire community, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other volunteers was something I’ll never forget.”
The completed build provides a safe and welcoming environment for children and their families during their most difficult moments. The Fencing Bloke says being part of something so significant has strengthened the company’s commitment to giving back to the local area.
“Cheshire has always supported us as a business,” Ash added. “This was our chance to give something back.”
The BBC DIY SOS episode featuring The Joshua Tree build was aired last night, 13th November.
